I am pleased to announce the creation of the Bob Gore collection at the National Museum of African Americans and Culture in Washington, DC. Having my work selected by the premier African American cultural institution is a high honor and a dream come true.
NMAHC, the newest of the Smithsonian Institution museums, was opened on September 24, 2016, by President Barack Obama and is the only national museum devoted exclusively to documenting African American experience. There all people can learn about the richness and diversity of the African American experience, what it means to their lives and the nation’s history.
My photographs result from unique access to worship gatherings, musical performances, scholarly presentations, and the gatherings of political and fraternal organizations.
The following are sample images from the collection. The entire collection will be available online in the near future.
Several people directly contributed to making the Bob Gore Collection a reality. Kurt Boone, a friend and fellow photographer, believed in my work and made the initial contact with NMAHC. His effort opened the door to the relationship. The museum’s experts provided extensive encouragement, helpful critiques, and guidance in selecting materials for the collection.
I am incredibly grateful to Aaron Bryant, Museum Curator, Photography, Visual Culture, and Contemporary History, who initiated the collection-building process. During our video session, he astonished me by referring to my work as a “national treasure.” His associate, Loren E. Miller, Ph.D., Museum Specialist, led the extensive follow-up with detailed and compassionate guidance. Her continuous motivation was valuable to me.
